Well, we spend something like 20x more on the Obama "royal" family than Brits do on their actual royal family, so...

This entire "Royal Family" nonsense just strikes me as so bizarre in this day and age. Just as ridiculous as Hollywood star worship...maybe even more so. Does the royal afterbirth hold magical powers? What a crock!
Why do you care that they care? Or do you just enjoy being the token downer? Let people enjoy what they want and you can keep not enjoying it.

The downer finds gloom in a joyous event like the birth of a baby.

If I had a daughter, we would most definitely be wearing tiaras and watching with rapt attention.

Some are just a tad bitter- even me the old curmudgeon is happy to hear a child has just been born...about half an hour ago...I think I will go have a look at the chaos on Youtube.

True. And look at the hideous media attention that was given the kardashian baby and that whole family of prostitutes who got their start in celebrity by releasing a porn flick. At least the british royal family has some class and dignity.

As much as some US media would like to pretend that the difference is due to the Obamas living it up (because we all know how those sorts of people are once they get money, don't we?), it is a frivolous comparison. To get at the 1.4 billion figure, the author had to add in stuff like operating and maintaining Air Force One and Marine One, the cost of the Secret Service detail, and such debunked anecdotes like the dog walker - which turned out to be a figment of enraged imaginations.

Whereas the British Royals have a serious fortune amassed over centuries and don't need the apparatus surrounding the head of government of a superpower.

Excuuuuse me. The audacity I have for questioning the absurd reverence some people have for a monarchy in the 21st century. Archaic nonsense.
