I hope it will be possible to have a reasonable discussion about this topic.

There exists a very obvious racial divide when it comes to perceptions about justice in America - as we've seen most recently with the Trayvon Martin case. In a recent poll, most whites agreed with the not guilty verdict for Zimmerman, while most African Americans strongly disagreed with the verdict.

What is your opinion about this? What are the causes of this enormous racial divide? Where does America go from here?

Differing perceptions of day-to-day life and the inability to understand the other side. Blacks and whites (and Hispanics and Asians) are not going to see eye-to-eye because they don't experience the same things. I can't tell you what it's like to be a white guy, and a white guy can't tell you what it's like to be me. The problem comes in when people start trying to tell the other side that they are making things up, and it's all in their head. The best way I can say it is this: if you (not necessarily you, OP, just any person in general) don't believe racism exists anymore, it's probably because you are part of the dominant majority that doesn't experience racial stereotyping on a regular basis.

Where does America go from here? Idk. People need to realize that there are differences and minorities do sometimes face things that a white person may not have to. Same with poor people, women, gay people, etc. Once we acknowledge what these obstacles are, we can collectively take them down and continue moving forward. But as long as we point fingers and say "it's your fault we're like this" or "you're making this up", then we will go nowhere.

Also, I give this post 2 pages before it gets out of hand.

There sure is a divide. Zimmerman was given a trial. the jury found him not guilty. If it was reversed and martin walked, the black people would say justice was served. Human nature is to side with your people. white with white, black with black, latin with latin, etc.... that is just the way it is.
our justice system is not perfect because it is made up of people. The people are given a trial, the jury is chosen by both attorneys. It is not like the jury is selected by one person. the attorneys agree on who they chose. If people are mad, maybe it should be at martins attorney for not having at least a black person on there.
There will always be injustice at times. but most of the time the system works.

Civilized people accept that the jury are there for justice. They know the jury is the best to decide because they only get to view the evidence and not all the hype that goes with the case.

Uncivilized people are not reasonable and do not care about rules and regulations. They are like two year olds that demand it their way whether it should be or not. The divide will change when the uncivilized people become civilized.

Will it happen? Doesn't look like it right now!

Except it's not just perception... look at incarceration rates. e.g. marijuana use rates for blacks are at or below that of whites... yet marijuana related arrests are 3-4 times higher for blacks than whites.

Stopping the war on drugs would go a long way. The lemmings fell for the media induced Zimmerman race trail.

No, not really...... so many injustices in the American justice system..... it is definitely not the best in the world

See... all the people executed over the years who were really innocent.... see sentencing where blacks get longer sentences than whites, where money buys freedom etc.

Oh, and I am white too..... the justice system in America is a joke

Because way too many black Americans just don't want to let go of the race tool. Pretty simple...

There is a VERY simple explanation for that. There are more blacks running the streets everyday in possession of MJ and getting caught doing other crimes. There is also that "curb-side" drug service offered in the black communities and people are getting busted for it. Lawyers play into it as well, if you don't have decent legal representation, you won't get good representation! That goes for ALL races! Most people that smoke MJ that I know, don't run around with it in their possession, they leave it home. Maybe more blacks should do that.

The huge racial divide does exist but when you bring in false accusations of racial profiling, stalking, vigilante murder than you end up losing people. The cries for racism will fall on deaf ears even more so than before. Perhaps you should ask this question without having the Zimmerman case hovering over as an example. People will more readily discuss this issue if the mob run witch hunt case didn't have an influence on their opinion. You can't try to lynch an innocent man and then cry racism when it he wasn't racist. Maybe I'm wrong but you can still be critical of systemic wrongs while remaining rational on a case by case basis. But if you can't remain rational then the system isn't the only thing that's wrong. It's the people. People who are driven by nothing but paranoia and anger who go out and seek anyone, anything to falsely accuse and hurt.
