It's either payback for previous favors or pay-forward for future ones.
Besides, not showing up for a vote means you don't have to defend it.
Sneaky maneuvering by Senators still surprises some? Why? They couldn't care less what we mere mortals think. Given the way elections are run these days, and the incredible advantage that attends incumbents, they have virtually lifetime tenure unless they tap their toe in the wrong restroom.
(And I do get a chuckle from that ongoing description of Bernie Sanders as an "Independent." I'd like to see how many times he hasn't voted with the Dems.
