Y'know, not so long ago, we here in the Western United States had the silver dollar "cartwheel". We had no trouble with them. Anytime we accumulated more than 4 (5 or more, in other words), we traded them for a 5 or 10 dollar bill. So, we always had 4 or less in our pocket.
I liked them. Most were minted in Denver or Carson City. When I visited my grandparents in PA, I would take 20 or so back there with me. Those folks back there would gladly pay $2 for one of them!
So, my vote is YES, bring back the "cartwheel"!
Especially here in the West!

Agreed. They would definitely need to invent a way to make carrying coins more convenient.

And I'm talking about convenience for the non-stripping populace..

Just out of curiosity, I checked my billfold.
I have 7 one dollar bills in there. If they were coins, five of them would have been converted to a $5 bill.
But then, they would be in my pocket, not the billfold.
In the coin pouch of the billfold, there is a Sacagawea dollar COIN, a Susan B. Anthony dollar COIN, and a Canadian "Tooney" $2 COIN. They have been there so long I tend to forget I have them!
I have never found a $1 coin to be an inconvenience, other than the last efforts were too close to a quarter in size. THAT was annoying!

Canadians switched without much fuss, without concern for strippers, and don't regret the move. The American dollar bill however is more iconic and resistance is more emotional about losing a symbol than about practicality. Dollar coins reduce govt expenses.

lets do away with .01, .05, and .10 and see how that works.

We can work in multiples of .25
Great idea, now if we can convince oil companies to get rid if that $2.99 & 9/10's!

It does not work having both. It's been tried in the USA a couple of times. People tend to hoard the coins and continue to use the one dollar bill. If they want to change to dollar coins they have to remove the bills from circulation.

if the dollar coin is large enough that is wont be confused for a quarter, or if they change the color of the coin so that you can differentiate it from a quarter, then i have no issue with dollar coins. however i would not completely eliminate the dollar bill either.
