Classism, for lack of a better term for it. Perhaps "culturalism" is a better term, since we're dealing with the culture people embrace.
There are plenty of hard working, professional, black families that are far from urban, black, "gangsta" thugs. Quite honsetly, the blacks I know hate "gangsta" culture more than anyone else I know and don't want to be associated with it in any way. There are plenty of whites, Asians and Hispanics that embrace "gangsta" or "hip-hop" culture.
To quote a phrase I heard a while ago. "There are black people and there are ni**ers. Not all blacks are ni**ers and not all ni**ers are black". I don't like the language, but it pretty well sums up the issue.
If I'm walking down the street at 2am & I see 3 guys with their pants sagging, corn rows, neck/face/hand tattoos, loud talking, dropping N words & F bombs, I'm going to cross the street.
If I'm walking down the street at 2pm & I see 3 guys wearing blazers & khakis, carrying brief cases & talking in civilized manner I would never cross the street.
Am I racist part of the time? No, I'm class-ist. Black folks who subscribe to & participate in mainstream aren't out mugging people. Black folks who subscribe to & participate in gang/thug/ghetto culture may well be dangerous.
which do you feel has more an effect on how people are viewed in todays society?
White classism(culturalism?) is by far the biggest factor. Progressive whites hate non-progressive/apolitical whites with the burning passion of a million suns and this colors every single social interaction in America.
Our country has always promoted classicism. It's a part of capitalism. We promote education and white collar jobs and frown upon vocational school and blue collar jobs. We celebrate success and frown upon underachievement. That is the American way.
Racism is separate from classism. They are not intertwined. Your ability to become educated and rise socially in this country has nothing to do with your race. You might think it does, but your opinion is not reality. The "underrepresented minorities" (Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans) who are successful in this country don't allow their race to be an excuse for underachieving.
Classism by far. Discrimination is more driven by ones behavior, not how they were born.
