And what do you mean when you say, "that sweater is retarded looking"? Please explain how that is not negative. If it's negative, you're making fun of retarded people, b/c there is no way a sweater can be mentally disabled, or late, or any other of the real meanings of "retarded".
It's the same with "that's so gay" that was popular among teens, oh, 10 years ago or so. (Don't know if it still is, my kids are thankfully out of teenhood.)
You never know if someone has a close loved one who is mentally retarded. This could be a very hurtful thing for them to hear. I would think they have enough stress in their lives anyway.
I hear women using it all the time against their boyfriends or husbands.
Anytime a guy does something playfully stupid, blatantly stupid or says something stupid that she doesn't agree with, out pops that question.
Are you retarded? OR, Are you acting like a retard just to p*ss me off?
It is offensive if you actually know someone who is legally and medically deemed as seriously challenged, handicapped socially and intellectually. A lot of times these people do more good for their communities than those who are free of this diagnosis. Who is to say who is the normal one in this world?
I've had a few shouting matches with ex girlfriends on the use of this word.
Also, "homophobia" is a hate word for those who actually is neutral to homosexuals and negative towards homosexuality as a political ideology. I wont even mention that this word is silly, since its laughable to imagine someone being scared of homosexuals (if they dont get too far with makeup). Anyone using this word is performing a hate speech (in addition to being ignorant).
What word should we use when people are being stupid then?
Can we say they're "pulling a Trayvon"?
