I am willing to watch some punk empty my yard while waiting for the police to arrive but the problem is I would be scared to death that they weren't willing to stay in the yard. I would have every reason to believe that they plan on coming in my house because they have already shown that locked doors are ineffective and immaterial to them. Then, when the police still haven't arrived, what am I supposed to do? Am I allowed to defend myself then or do they have to have a knife at my throat before I am in imminent danger? Have actually injured me? Where is that magic line where I am allowed to protect myself in your eyes?
This homeowner had a gun. If the kid had so much as tried to enter his home before the police arrive that would have been the time to use his gun, not before. He could have just yelled out to the kid, "I have a gun, get lost", but hey, then he wouldn't have been able to shoot a black kid.
The criminal justice system failed once again, the result being the death of a young man. In this case the criminal had several burglary arrests. Had he been in prison where he belonged, he would (perhaps) be alive and an innocent man would not be in this predicament. Much like Trayvon, who should have been locked up for the stolen jewelry, rather than pounding an innocent man's head into the concrete.

14 year olds are not put in prison for burglary and Trayvon was not charged with a crime - ever. It would be kind of hard to lock him up. You people just make up facts as you go along...
The murderer, who was trying to protect his family from a 14 year old who was outside in the yard, at least 30 feet from the house, and making no attempt to get into the house, is going to have a tough time doing so while he's in prison.
