Political correctness: ‘Brown bag,’ ‘citizens’ are out at City Hall | Strange Bedfellows — Politics News - seattlepi.com

To say that one "brown-bagged it today," meaning 'brought lunch from home' is still a fairly common expression. Elliot Bronstein of the Seattle Office for Civil Rights finds this expression to be racist. All PR personnel at city agencies have been advised not to use the term. Instead, they should use the expression "lunch and learn" (??) or "sack lunch" (say isn't that potentially a gender-biased and therefore offensive?)

And furthermore, they are advised to avoid "citizen" because it is not inclusive of Seattle residents who are not citizens. Bronstein notes that the city's "Citizen's Service Bureau" was renamed the "Customer Service Bureau," presumably for this reason.

Looks to me like city employee Bronstein has way too much time on his hands.

He would get upset if you brought him a "Brown Bag of Brazil Nuts"

Well, I can't speak for everyone on the left, but I personally think this is pretty stupid. Sounds like the city official got his information that this was offensive from a lunchroom conversation, not from an actual advocacy group.

But, if you don't mind, limit your snide remarks for this particular government official and please please please don't sell us to Canada.

Damn I feel like such a racists. When asked if I wanted a vanilla or chocolate Frosty at Wendy's, I chose vanilla. I did not realize what I had done until I got to my table, and saw all of the horrible stares. Damn, I am so sorry.

I think all sides of the political spectrum can agree that this is ridiculous.

I think you are right. But there are always going to be someone who will act like they "understand" why its racist and will try to defend it.

Meh, not yet from what I can tell. I've only skimmed this thread, but I haven't seen anyone defending this.

Well, not yet...most people think it is stupid. But there is always going to be someone who feels differently. Maybe they come on here and say something maybe they don't . I do have a few posters in mind that I can see saying something. But those are the usual trouble makers. lol so there won't be any surprise for any of us.

If the liberal nuts in WA want to make a real change, then do something for the increasing population of homeless people in that state. They just throw crap on the wall and hope it sticks.

AHHAAHHA!!
I literally lol'ed. Actually this very brown bag quite enjoys a bit of white bread sandwiches and crazy ass crackers as long as they are about 6ft 4inches, with dirty blond hair and weigh ~200+ extra fit pounds. Not that I am picky mind you, (scandinavian knäckebröd preferred, thank you very much.....)
