I know a city councilman and mayor personally in NC that pulled in close to $8M on a solar deal for one of the ports. They created one of those "Green Inc." companies to manufacture the panels using tax money and outsourced the work to a Chinese company.

Be sure to look into your local politicians and their many tech or textiles companies.
yes, and it is a more escoteric problem without any clear solutions.

I just wonder what is the future for the low-education, low-skill Americans.
Obviously they cannot work in finance or IT, so what can they do? Just live on welfare?

basically , yes.

it's hard to imagine what will happen to a species that once faced huge selective pressure from death and disease -- suddenly thrust into a world of abundance, where all we do is eat, sleep, and screw each other.

Here is the May, 2013 letter from the United Steelworkers:

There's too much emotional and not enough factual information to form a rational position.

US used to be the leading industrial global power as well as the leader in developing large engineering projects. These capabilities were unmatched by any other country.

they make good points , i just don't think they do an adequate job of proving that chinese steel is inferior.

saying it is 'potentially inferior' is pretty much meaningless.

i DO have a problem with our governments being unable to tell high-quality from low-quality.
This is the real answer, becasue if the quality is satisfactory, go with the low price.

Solar could well be very different though as far as your 'opportunist'. Because China so heavily subsidized their solar industry, it could have very well been that the Chinese panels suddenly became so cheap as to undercut the productions costs of the formerly potential local manufacturer. This is how China has been crushing US and EU competition in solar. One very large project here in AZ has saved something like $200M simply by waiting, as Chinese panels become so cheap.

Competition and technology have eliminated millions of jobs.

Outsourcing of steel manufacturing began in the 1960's, when it began becoming apparent the world was not going to pay a premium for steel manufactured in the U.S.
