Probably has a lot to do with the weather.

You really can't beat California weather.

I spend a lot of time in San Diego on business, I love it, wouldn't want to live there though.

Interesting list. Most of these states are highly educated, most (but not all) are blue states, and most probably have relatively low income inequality.

San Diego is pretty much the most beautiful place in the country. La Jolla, in particular, is awesome. Expensive, but awesome.

If San Diego is the most beautiful place in the United States, then Spam is our greatest delicacy.

This is a ridiculous argument just so you know.

I don't think anyone asserts that every Californian is miserable, just that the state has some fiscal/political issues. How you conflate the two I'm not quite sure...

I wouldn't bet it's the absolute most beautiful scenery wise, but it wins on weather, hands down.

And it's not ugly by any stretch.

I think the reason those top 10 countries are so happy is because they are countries that actually enforce their immigration laws.

and Cali is not even on the list. Maybe too many illegals affecting the quality of life there, between crime and bankrupting the state.

And there are five states--West Virginia, Ohio , Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas--that have ranked at the bottom since 2008. This probably has a lot to do with poverty levels in those states--but more importantly, these states rank poorly on all of the factors surveyed. West Virginia is actually ranked 38th for "work environment," but 50th on everything else. Behold, the 10 least happy states in the country, ranked from happiest to least happy.
  1. Nevada
  2. Indiana
  3. Louisiana
  4. Ohio
  5. Alabama
  6. Arkansas
  7. Tennessee
  8. Mississippi
  9. Kentucky
  10. West Virginia
All dark red states, except Nevada. Not sure why Nevada is so unhappy.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas? That's not a happy place.
