NBC is assuring its gay and lesbian employees who may cover the Winter Olympics in Sochi that it will do everything possible to keep them safe following Russia’s passage of anti-gay law.

NBC security trumps Russian police, in Russia? Tell me how that works exactly.

Far as boycotting, I do not agree with except the sponsors. About every LGBT site mentions boycotting and that is a coward approach as my status line states being visible is alot more powerful than being invisible.
Y! SPORTS

If anything I would like to see all of the LGBT athletes stand together and hold hands and stand behind our fellow LGBT Russian brother and sisters to stand against this Nazi round up.

Yes I said Nazi, this is exactly how Hitler began the concentration camps he started with laws against gays.

PDA like fans holding their partner hands, congratulatory kisses, Rachel Maddow.

Actually in Russia men kissing men even on the mouth is normal, and not gay. So, again, how would they know which NBC employees are gay? The obvious answer is that they would not know.

Good letter from Stephen Frye to PM Cameron et al. about why the Winter Olympics should be boycotted:

"[Putin] is making scapegoats of gay people, just as Hitler did Jews. He cannot be allowed to get away with it . . . I am gay."
Gay actor Stephen Fry calls for Sochi Olympics ban in open letter to British PM David Cameron and the IOC

Then you say that it would be appropriate for straight spouses/boyfriend/girlfriend to be allowed on the field to plant a congratulatory kiss on their SO? I haven't seen that as part of the protocol in the past, where the person the athlete is boinking becomes part of the winners' platform crew.

If you don't like the way Russia works, then by all means don't go. A personal boycott will certainly send a message that Russia will notice.

Russia is hosting the Olympic Games in great part to foster a positive image, to foster trade. NBC is essentially paying for the privilege of running a two week long commercial for Russia. If Russia does something oppressive toward Americans at the games, Russia's investment will be lost. Like it or not, the American television network broadcasting the games has overwhelming power over the host nation, even when it is a former superpower.

So? Boycott. Do people really think that boycotting a sporting even such as this is going to have a deleterious effect on it?

The whole boycott doesnt make sense. Let me put it way I see it. Russia makes laws banning gays. A boycott is giving them what they want no gays.

Thanks, it will be interesting to see if NBC will push buttons particularly Rachel Maddow with the oppression and does interviews particularly with torturing of gay teens.

Johnny Weir added that his presence in Sochi could help rally opposition to the anti-gay legislation and the treatment of LGBT Russians. He said he has made peace with the possibility of being arrested.

Time the Gays to face some reality. I hope the Russians give them a good dose of it. If they keep their antics to a minimum they should be fine. If they go around prancing about they maybe dealt with.
