Incredible that nobody knows how to stop that thing

It may sound strange, but how about evacuating a wide radius and making it explode? They could control the time, thus the world around Japan could get prepared, stay inside, etc.

Hiroshima has become a livable place again, despite the nuclear bomb...
Basically, you are taking huge amts of highly radioactive materials and dispersing it into the atmosphere. Kinda SOL either way. Can't compare this to a bomb.
This is especially nasty.
MOX fuel rods used in Japanese Nuclear Reactor present ...

Gee How long will that situation in Japan last if it goes on like this? Decades? Centuries? France is full of nuclear reactors, I hope they don't use that MOX stuff there as well.

And how about fighting fire with fire, i.e. dropping a nuclear bomb on that site?

The answer is unknown. This could end up being devastating over the years to many. This is a global issue. MOX is used elsewhere. What site? Trying to blow any of this up will just make tiny highly radioactive particles that will be dispersed in the atmosphere to be carried elsewhere. Nuclear fission power is a very bad idea.
