Thread title says it all. Should immigrants to France learn to speak French and familiarize themselves with French culture? Thanks

In one word: Yes.

Just as the great wave of immigrants to the US including including groups such as the Irish and Germans in the early 19th century and then the Jews, Poles, Italians, Chinese, Scandanavians, etc. after the Civil War through the Hispanics and Caribbeans in the 20th century ... it is in everyone's best interest to blend into our American civilization.

Assimilation does not mean you for forget your history and heritage nor do not honor your religion and culture.

Yes.

If for example, I immigrated to France, I would WANT to learn it's language and be able to fit in with the French people. How stupid to want to just go on living like you did back in your own country -- the country you left.

Yes.

Something like: "when in Rome do as the Romans do".

I think France has very strict rules on immigration that state an immigrant has to speak French to move there. But yes, I think they should. France has an ancient culture and has only been an immigrant nation since the 1960s. Their culture needs to be respected and preserved.

Thank you for the well thought out response. Can you think of some nations that should not have immigrants respect and preserve their culture? Thanks

OP, why don't you just come out and make your point? I know what it is, but I think all of us would like to see you be honest instead of beating around the bush

What, you mean like a lot of the Western nation's expats around the globe who congregate in groups of fellow countrymen and never do any such thing?

If they want to, yes. Should they be made to? No. I don't believe a free country should make anyone something they're not.

I don't believe in telling the French what to do.

A) They don't care for it.

B) It's their country.

But if you're open to the French butting into your business call President Hollande and let him know.
