This is something that has never been granted to their heterosexual counterparts, and will continue to not be granted to them. So much for equality. The theory is that this will allow them to travel to states where the marriages are legal. However, the service has never granted uncharged leave to those seeking to travel to one of the 20 states that allow marriage to first cousins when stationed a place that doesn't allow it. And in before someone comments on it - I personally know two couples the first cousin issue applied to.

Good on the military to do this. Heterosexuals have 50 states they can get married as opposed to the 20 that homosexuals have.

I'm sure heterosexuals in the military can get by without having 10 uncharged days of leave. You do understand that every single military member only gets 1.5 days of leave a month don't you?

Seriously, good the military for doing this.

Oldhag - So why do you care?
In the 40's President Truman made it legal for blacks to have equality in the military.
Later, women were given a somewhat equal standing.
Now, it's the turn of the homosexuals to have their equality.

That's what is known as progress - something that conservatives often have a problem with.

The leave should be uniform.

What if a heterosexual couple is stationed in Florida and they want to marry in Washington because their parents are too ill to travel?

My husband is military. I know all about leave, all about everyone pretty much having to take leave to travel to a home state to get married, all about weddings getting postponed because leave was canceled for mission needs. More service members need to travel to get married than don't. Why are only homosexual service members getting free leave for this?

Yet they can get married perfectly fine in Florida as well as Washington, they have that liberty.

Homosexuals only have about 20 states, so the military obviously is taking a logical step to help curtail that with a reasonable decision and protocol.

I commend the military for doing this.

I want the leave policy to be equal. This is disparate treatment, which is specifically against Department of Defense policies. I have no issue with equality - this isn't equality.

There is no equality until gay couples can get married in any state, which I'm sure you are actively fighting for, right?

Well, you should want gay marriage to be equal as well. Until it is, they have this. Sorry!

Neither fighting for it, nor fighting against it. I agree with equality but way too many people don't want equality, they want better than equality.
