Objectively speaking, he is a failure because his policies have failed.
We have the highest unemployment in many decades (worse than the Carter years), more people on welfare than any time in my lifetime, and the number still growing, full time work is now 30 hours, not 40, family incomes have dropped significantly, gasoline prices on his watch have remained well above $3/gal (currently around $3.40/gal ± in my area) while pump prices could be significantly lower (this is a result of his poor energy policy — where's the pipeline?), he as presided over (and enabled) the takeover of much of the Middle East by terrorists (The Muslim Brotherhood, which he supports), nobody knows exactly what his foreign policy is (does he even have a foreign policy?).
And let's not even discuss the massive increase in our national debt under his watch, and it continues to rise.
The entire four, nearly five years of his presidency have been a total disaster for America.
Things will not improve untill this man is out of office, and someone with some common sense, an understanding of economics and what constitutes a foreign policy, is elected. And that person is NOT Hillary Clinton, who would be a female version of Barack Obama.

To say that the absolute mess Obama or McCain inherited is a perfect opportunity shows that the OP is clueless. A global recession that was the worst in 100 years, 2 wars and a do nothing congress. Sorry, but that's not an opportunity. What W walked in to was one. Obama and McCain faced a complete mess.
