It may be true that many immigrants are not aware of the history of slavery here in the U.S. I guarantee that after living here for a while, they will learn, because it will never be left to become history, but rather a constant drumbeat that demands we are ever reminded of what some of our ancestors did.

The people living today DID NOT ENSLAVE ANYONE, save for a few fruits like that Castro guy in Ohio.

One must go back at least four generations and beyond to find actual events. This country does not do this anymore. Now, in some nations around the world, it still goes on. How about marching for their cause? Child labor, sex slavery, etc., is rampant elsewhere. We have, in a relatively short time span, evolved from such hellish practices. Other nations have not, even today.

EtA: Harriet Tubman is one of the people I admire most. She sacrificed so much her entire life. She risked her life for not only family, but many, many others. The "pity me" concept wasn't in her mindset! Is her life taught in schools anymore? I hope so. She was truly a Mother Teresa of her time. It was interesting to learn that she carried a revolver on her many trips to help others.

Constant drumbeat that demands you are ever reminded of what your ancestors did? Really? I was in the 11th grade before black history (only the Civil Rights movement) was even MENTIONED in school. In elementary and middle school, all I remember learning was maybe a brief bit on MLK during Black History Month, and Eli Whitney and the cotton gin (accompanied by a picture of happy, singing slaves.) Harriet Tubman? Nothing about her, or any other black person that contributed to American history. And this isn't all that long ago.

I only learned of the history of black Americans as an adult, when I made the effort to myself. Nowhere did I ever hear a "constant drumbeat" of anything but negativity when it came to blacks. Our history is American history. Just because it's a sordid part of history many don't want to discuss or be reminded of does not mean it should be swept under the rug to protect those that would rather pretend it didn't happen. And NO WHERE do I see any black person using slavery as an excuse for bad behavior. If anything, if they KNEW their history, they may be less likely to buy into the stereotypes that have been created for them, have pride in themselves, and realize that they have the potential for greatness.

Regardless of where he originates from, all of these race related crimes are senseless and do nothing but promote stereotypes and racism. He better be charged with a hate crime as well as attempted murder.
Seriously?

Any reason he wanted that apology then? You know, since he is not black according to you.

A person of African descent also can blame Whites for his problems. There's a huge difference in culture between Black Americans and Africans. In fact, there's many problems with relations and stereotypes....kind of deserves it's own discussion in a separate post.

Here's a lighthearted clip of Aries Spears explanation during his stand up routine.

For those who have a hard time understanding why people still beat the drum of the effects on slavery and other mistreatments need to just sit back and read some of the post. To shine some light on current events understand at this moment voting rights are coming under attack. It's not so easy to disregard the effects of slavery when some in power who can have a material effect on people would have no problem going back to the times of slavery..In all things follow the money.

I think one reason race relations have gotten so much worse in the past few years is our black president is black first and president second.
