1. There's a stereotype that Southerners, Texans, people from the heartland, aka Red staters, etc; are dumb as rocks. Folks that you can't trust to sit the right way on toilets. This is the place where GW Bush, Dan Quayle, and Sarah Palin are the smart ones.
But if you've been to the Red states, you know this isn't true. There are some smart people there.
2. If you travel outside the country, there's a stereotype regarding United States that says every American carries a gun and dispute are settled by the fastest draw. If your car broke down and you knock on someone's door to seek help, you should be expected to get shot at through the door. Dodging bullets is part of every American's daily routine and everyone alive has survived and lives to tell the tales.
3. People who are against Obamacare are stone cold heartless demons who cheer at people dying (they'd call it waste disposal) and would personally perform lethal injections on all terminally ill patients if they could legally get away with it.
Reminds me of that line from the movie Disclosure. Dennis Miller's character makes some crack about women. That female engineer says "that is such a cliche". To which he replies, "hey, how do you think cliches become cliches?" Because they happen so often, that's how.
A great many of stereotypes are true if you just make sure not to say "all" and qualify your statement with words like "most" etc.
Stereotyping is a human way of dealing with life's complexities. I believe there's even a scientific study concluding that or something to that extend.
Stereotyping is what lazy and stupid people do. An intelligent person can analyze each person he meets without attempting to fit them into a box.
