You have to remember that in that time our equivalent items would be getting a TV, a land line phone, a washing machine, dryer. That generation had their new gadgets just like we do today, so moot point there, and they had more children than people do today.

And this quality of work is worth $15 an hour? I don't think so.

And only about 5 percent of workers work at federal minimum wage rates. Which means that 95 percent of workers make above federal minimum wage.
I have never, not once, rec'd a wrong order at a fast food restaurant, anywhere.

Compensation is based on supply and demand.

I see so we just expect a house twice the size, three or four TVs plus 180 channel sat or fiber, several phones, several game consoles, a couple computers, a couple SUVs, and we complain if we can't do it off of one income like the good ole '50s? Rubbish.

Just look at the price of gas over in Europe as a comparison. Gas in the UK is $10/gallon (USD converted).

You can't just look at salary.
A single tix ride on the London underground is $7.00-8.50 USD, dependent on zone.
I DK if their public transport is less subsidized than comparable transport in the U.S. or if it's a factor of the cost of living. In contrast, the cost of subsidized public transportation is $2.25 for a single ride in Chicago and $2.75 in NYC.

In 1978, when I was just seventeen, I worked for $4.00/hour.

Adjusted for inflation, that translates to $14.28/ hour in today's money, but this was construction work, so it paid more than flipping burgers.

My friends who worked in fast food restaurants earned the $2.35/ hour minimum wage which is about $8.16/ hour in 2012 dollars.

The $15/ hour these people are talking about is available, but it isn't available to fast food workers.

It wasn't then and it isn't now.

I guess you don't understand the economic differences between then and now. Nobody said that there were not people that live outside of their means today. As an entire group though the low and middle class earns less now when adjusted for the cost of living than in the 50's. Incomes have not kept up with the cost of living. The only group better off now are the ultra-rich and corporations. Sorry if you don't like that, just pointing out one of the biggest problems with the economy today.

It's not going to happen.
