If other OPEC countries jumped on board the US could have lost the $US as the world reserve currency and lost a lot of its economic power.
Of course you can't go to war for that reason, you need something more "just".

There was never a threat to the dollar as being the supreme and preferred currency around the globe in those days you speak of. Matter of fact, there still isn't and not because of any wars we've had.
