I don't think the draft would fly today, and you can't lock everyone up.

You believe that WW2 should have been voluntary only?

Our draft system is broken. Until the government enforces the required registration requirements for all of those who are legally required to register having a draft would not work. The fighting would be in our streets. Our government because of its refusal to enforce our laws has no credibility to have a draft.

Anyway, I was not only talking about the U.S., but about other countries worldwide as well.
And now that combat positions have been opened to women, all females need to register too. Equal is equal.

In general I support it. But having served IN the 60's I agree with military leaders that in this whatever turns who on secular society many are not fit to serve in military. Basically they are to self serving.

Having served in the 60's as well, I recall our society being just as malfunctioning then as now. The only difference now is communications are vastly superior. That said, I am of mixed emotions on the draft. Most now join the military to be able to afford an education or for a guaranteed job. This limits the pool of military enlistees. During the 60's and up until 1972 the draft went through changes. First there were college deferments, then those went away and instead there were marriage deferments. In both cases these deferments favored those who were financially able to avoid the draft. Take away the deferments and you get a better and more balanced military. Given our present and subsequent administrations over the last number of years, I am opposed to the draft, but not on any civil rights basis. I am opposed to sending any of our young men and women to war to fight for idiot politicians who don't give a damn about them.

There is a better quality soldier when that person really wants to be in the service instead of the person forced to serve against his will.
