No I'm being serious. Your husbands co-worker may hate working and would love to have the day off to spend time with family. Lots of people having the day off from work loves their job as well. Just because you love your job a lot doesn't mean you should be at work 15 hours a day. Right?
This is the problem in America. Owners/CEO's taking advantage of workers due to no government labor law.
So a company should close and pay everyone holiday pay because an employee may want a day off to spend with his/her family? Even though the employee knew full well what days were paid holidays when he/she took the job in the first place? It's not like it was a surprise work day added at the last minute.

Who said anything about working 15 hours a day?
Of course they should! Indeed, there should be statutory holidays like most other western nations where companies must pay employees having a day off, just like mandating 5 weeks paid vacation. I know many knows about it, but just because there is no law doesn't mean employees should be treated like crap!
Since your husband loves his job that much; is he willing to work 365 days a year?
Many doctors, nurses, Allied Health personnel, and other essential non-clinical health personnel, firefighters, and police officers worked today as well.
Understandably and for good reason.
Most take turns.
Labor Day is a day when people should be "off" (a.k.a day off/no work) - then how come most retail stores and malls are videly open in the United States? Most aren't even half day/reduced hours. This is ridiculous.
Yes, I know they are having "Labor Day or Back to school sale" and many people are shopping, but retail workers deserves a day off as well. We need to bring back blue laws or having statutory holidays where employees must be off by law on certain major holidays except emergency services.
That's communist - which is exactly why we got rid of May Day and replaced it with Labor Day.
I have a friend who is a city bus driver. He gets paid double time on his birthday, which happens to fall on a holiday. He always volunteers to work on that day because he gets double pay plus holiday pay.
Who wouldn't want to work under those circumstances? He just celebrates his birthday on another day!
At my job, everyone gets paid even if you don't work the holiday, and those who do work get triple pay - whammo! 100 bucks an hour, sweeeeet.
Mostly because private companies want to make money. Thus they stay open.
