It is definitely time to declare Good Friday and Easter Monday as federal holiday in the United States just like it is a holiday in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most of Europe and other large part of the world.

It is very ridiculous and insulting that it isn't a national holiday yet. Most nations celebrating those holidays as national are secular as well, and do it part of culture and tradition. These holidays will create long weekend break during middle of spring where there are no holidays in March and April. Most Americans are Christians, so it absolutely makes sense. America also have the largest Christian population by number in the world.

Private companies are of course not obligated to celebrate them.

Why don't you just vote in the existing poll (at the top half of Page 1) instead of wasting bandwidth with yet another silly thread?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the vast majority of the 71-24 vote against making these days holidays are from Christians.

The problem is, the USA isn't like other Western countries. In the USA, somewhere between 40% and 60% of the population (depending on whose estimates you accept) thinks the world is only about 6,000 years old. More people in this country believe in angels than in evolution. The degree of scientific illiteracy in this country is shameful. And it is mainly caused by the overwhelming influence of fundamentalist Christianity.

Frankly, fundamentalist Christians have done enough damage already. Giving secular recognition to one of their religious holidays would just strengthen them, and they're way too strong as it is.

Why don't you open your own business and give everyone paid days off whenever you want, and leave other business owners to deal with their own business?

Well this seems to be a continuation of your previous thread where you declared that Labor day should be a national holiday.

I personally hate the idea. I would be, a little more okay, with a required amount of holidays for full time employees. . .but I don't like that idea much either.

Here is what I think:

Employer - its up to the guy running the business when he is opened
employee - its up to the guy working for the employer what days he is willing to work
customer - its up to the guy buying crap to decide what days he wants to go out
Govt - should shut the f' up and mind its own business

OP - does a store being open really make you feel better about your faith. Is your faith weekened by the fact I can go to chinese or a movie on Christmas? or even go to Wal_mart on easter? Does your god become weaker for every store that remains open?

My advice:

- if you don't want to work those days, dont. Don't shop. Don't do anything
- but maybe you should back off on forcing us to follow your lead. Maybe some of us like Chinese food on Christmas day traditions. . .

Have you clearly read my post? Doesn't seem like it.
This is a out federal offices being closed, including banks and postal offices.

Yes it is. It is an insult and Anti-Semitic and Anti-Christian as well, and against humanity.

Religious "special days" are meaningless to those not practicing that religion. Those that do can schedule their vacations and go do Disneyland or sleep in or whatever to celebrate their faith that day.

National Holidays don't lend credibility to any religion so it doesn't matter. Most places who get a choice choose days off for their employees based on how many people are likely to take the day off or "call in sick", whether it be a religious special day or the day after a big drinking holiday. That's the truth. The rest of the time it's Union negotiated.
