Much like anywhere else, you have to keep your personal opinions about certain things out of the workplace. Challenging your CO's in the military doesn't turn out too well.

Precisely. The best indicator of how much bull is in this article is that they mention the base commander, but never provide her name, nor got her side of the story on the record. So much for "fair and balanced".

Actually, thinking about it now, perhaps that tactic was used by the reporter to protect against being charged with defamation, for repeating the alleged false statements having committed demonstrably inadequate fact-checking.

And we don't know precisely what was said, but expressing an intention to not comply fully with and support the policy, with regard to those under your own command, even on religious grounds, should be grounds for dishonorable discharge. Bigotry is not who you are, and so the officer's oath obligates you to act in accordance with orders, even if you disagree with them.
