I hate pedophiles with a passion. They destroy children, and those children sometimes grow up to destroy other children. According to the Washington Times, to help combat the problem - "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Thursday that it has launched a mobile device app to harness the public’s help in trying to track down potential child sex predators in urgent cases." All fine and dandy, I think sexual predators should be castrated, and not chemically or with anesthesia.

Feds launch predator app on iTunes to catch child sex criminals - Washington Times

Yet I find myself reading this article with dread. The app allows tips to be reported anonymously 24 hours a day and taps into a database where people can view pictures of people involved in the sex trade of children. According to the WT - "The project grew out of the success ICE has already had harnessing social media to catch predators over the last year." So people are into informing on each other. Yeah, I get it, it's a pedophile, the heck with them. But it makes me uncomfortable.

I'm overreacting, but for good reason Between the IRS, the NSA, even going through an abusive TSA line at the airport, I don't trust the government to do the right thing anymore. The government is going to do what it thinks is best for you and public opinion be damned. What if the government decides it's citizens should start reporting on families who haven't inoculated their children? For the good of other children, of course. Imagine the ways informing on others can be used.

IMO the predator app is the first step on a slippery slope.

Most slippery slopes are started with good intentions, it's what makes them so dangerous. You think to yourself, Yeah that's reasonable, I'm willing to give up this little bit to make preventing this or getting that easier. Before you ever realize what has happened you are looking at a great loss because that little bit keeps getting bigger.
