I like most Catholics though! Especially the ones here in America. I think that Catholic immigrants to The States have contributed so many great things to our country.
My father is Catholic and a g-grandmother on mom's side was Catholic. I can't hate them too much. I wouldn't be here without them.
I can't say the same for those in Europe though. And this new pope keeps talking about how Catholics can't let materialistic desires prevent them from living in the more humble existence that God wants his people to live in. I read a speech by Pope Francis and it just reeked of socialism.
Really? You are not getting the actually message of what he is saying.
Hardworking Germans in the north vs lazy French in the south.
The French aren't lazy at all. And i could tell you things about the German work ethic that'll make your hair stand up. I supervised a whole crew of them for 9 years when i worked for DPW in Darmstadt.
Besides, the two countries border each other....it ain't like the air and water changes when you cross the border. A border that's changed a gajillion times over the centuries.
If you look at studies after studies, Northern Europe is much financially and socially off. Why is that? What's ironic is that Southern Europe gave rise to European enlightenment through Greek Philosophy.
Cold weather. Gotta work more (and innovate more) to stay comfortable and survive in cold weather.
That's why polynesians would still be running around naked if it wasn't for Europeans - because when you live on a tropical island, you don't really need any technology.

There are exceptions to every rule - perhaps it is a confluence of factors - close proximity to other societies meant there was a greater need to advance in order to compete...
One big reason. Less crowded, either due to colder weather or historic reasons. Development will be slow when there are limited resources per person, as seen in Southern Europe or in most parts of Asia. This results in more competition, more people out of good jobs, more corruption, more poverty and even more activism. Compare Italy with Germany and you get the picture.
