Empty promise? Did they got spooked by the US reaction to Syria WMD situation? Who knows, but that's what the new president is saying.

Iran's president Rouhani: We will never develop nuclear weapons - World News

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told NBC News on Wednesday that the country will never develop nuclear weapons and that he has the clout to make a deal with the West on the disputed atomic program.

“In its nuclear program, this government enters with full power and has complete authority,” Rouhani told Ann Curry, NBC News national and international correspondent and anchor at large, in his first interview with a U.S. news outlet since his election.

“The problem won't be from our side,” he said at the presidential compound in Tehran. “We have sufficient political latitude to solve this problem.”

Asked whether Iran would ever build a nuclear weapon, Rouhani noted that the country has repeatedly pledged that “under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever.”

Not very honest. This is what the new guy is saying, true or not. It is a different tone, because in the past they have been openly hostile towards us. Time will tell if this is just another way to BS.

Ahmadinejad? His term ran out, and this new guy won the elections. He is moderate, compared to the guy he was running against.

They signed the treaty years ago and meant it - we signed the non-proliferation treaty and didn't mean it. We are the aggressors, not them. If they chose to use such a weapon against anybody, they know they would be vaporized in minutes, and they aren't stupid.
The US is itchin for an excuse to show off their military superiority. Iran spends very little on their defenses compared to other countries, and none spend close to as much as we do. What we do spend is not for defense, but for offense globally.
Plus we supply our friends like Israel.
