Can you put Medicare, VA, or Tricare on sequester?? I didn't think so the Tea Party would have a complete hissy fit. Cant get rid of good socialism can we.
That was a different congress, a different economy, and a very different era. Congress would have to pass a bill for any "non-essential" federal employee to receive back pay after the end of a government shutdown.
We used to wonder who of the "essential" ones knew how to turn on the photocopy machine.
Many federal employees, such as myself (Natl Weather Service operational forecaster), are considered essential and we work no matter what. Now if you do work you will get back pay....but if you are considered non-essential and are not at work there is no guarantee you will get paid. In the mid 90s they did, but who knows this time (if it goes that far).
So thanks to the sequester, the deficit is $0 now right?
The deficit is less than if there wasn't a sequester. And here in West Virginia we certainly hope the EPA is sequestered enough to give our coal miners a desperately needed break. It is only karma if we see layoffs at the EPA after all the jobs they have destroyed in mining, agriculture, and manufacturing all across America. In my previous state of Maryland we saw them force 3000 people out of work at a major steel factory.
Even if they still are getting paid, government workers can do less damage if staying home. And all of them are unessential.
I know you probably mean that in jest...but I would say those air traffic controllers in the airport towers and those in the air route traffic control centers (ARTCC) are certainly quite important. Without them no flights.
