Speaking personally, I have extensive military training in the use of firearms and don't get my impression of them and the good they can do from prime-time television, as you quite possibly do.

I am not just cogitating, there have been plenty of trained professionals who chose not to use their guns in difficult situations for the safety of others. You can train all you want but this is a once in a lifetime situation and no one is really prepared, the bad guys will always have the advantage of surprise.
