Yup, the solution is to arm everyone, because then everyone will be safe. And make those weapons concealed, because then everyone will be even more safe.
Back the train up, which side is failing to propose any ideas to keep people safe from these atrocities? Last time I checked, most in this country would like to see increased/strengthened background checks aimed at dissuading the mentally unstable from purchasing guns... which the Dems have been pushing for. The only thing the right has offered up is "you better hope you get off the first shot!"
You haven't been paying attention then. I've seen gun rights advocates offer plenty of ideas to help keep people safe from these atrocities. For a short list, I've seen:
Enforcement of existing laws (which isn't happening right now).
Increased mandatory penalties for anyone who commits a crime with a firearm.
The return of the ability for family members to force an individual to receive treatment for psychological problems.
An end to or at least a serious revision of the idiotic War on Drugs which fuels the violence.
An end to the fallacy which is the Gun Free Zones Act.
While you may not agree with what the gun rights advocates are proposing, it's dishonest to say that they haven't been proposing anything. On a side note, using mental health records as part of the background check would be a serious violation of HIPAA laws as well as a violation of privacy rights.
CCW holders commit less than 1% of all firearms related crime. Posting a link to a story that shows a statistical outlier isn't going to change that, nor is it going to convince anyone who has a modicum of common sense that guns cause violence.
My point wasn't that all guns should be banned. Nor should they all blindly be snatched.
My point was that crazy people like Aaron Alexis shouldn't be able to buy a Remington 870 shotgun.
The two dolts from Ionia, Michigan, with their painfully obvious anger management issues, should have not been allowed to own guns, let alone being licensed to conceal carry.
Yet if anyone would suggest such a concept, it would be immediately rejected by the 'from my cold dead hands' crowd.
No, obviously I wouldn't want to see kids raped and killed.
But I would like to see some filtering that would make it more difficult for people with obvious mental issues to obtain guns. Do you have an objection to that?
Look, I'm not for banning guns and I readily admit that it's not possible to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and crazies 100% of the time. I do believe that more needs to be done to limit access to guns by people who have severe mental issues. Don't you?
So only right-wingers own firearms or support the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? I'll be sure to let about half the guys at the local range know that they are no longer allowed to own firearms because they are registered Democrats. They should find that humorous.

Correct, that is the problem. It was a mentally unstable man who was known to be mentally unstable and was still allowed to obtain and maintain a security clearance because the same bureaucracy which wishes to restrict the rights of U.S. citizens was incapable of doing their jobs.

No, the solution is to look at the causes of the violence, instead of looking at the tools that are used to commit violence. But feel free to run around with your blinders on.

Incidents such as the Navy Yard shooting shine a harsh light on the fact that the government fails to do their due diligence in many instances. The man was released on 2 prior gun charges which he should have been convicted of. Whether that was because of law enforcement, legislative loopholes, or judiciary incompetence, the fact is that the proper steps weren't taken.
While I do believe that people with violent mental problems should not be allowed to have firearms, the key is in weeding those people out without subjecting the rest of the citizenry to massive invasions of privacy. Quite frankly, mental health is a huge issue in this country, and it is being ignored by the same people who falsely claim to be "protecting" us by pushing more firearms legislation.
