Pope Francis says church cannot focus only on abortion and gay marriage - World News

Quote:
We have to find a new balance,” he said in the interview, published in Jesuit journals across the world. “Otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.”
He added: “The church’s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.”
The pope, since his installation in March, has focused on the poor and those on the margins of society. He has also drawn praise from some parishioners for gestures of humility and frugality. He has declined some of the trappings of the papacy, and personally returned the phone calls of some of the faithful who have written to him.
Maybe the GOP, most of middle America and the South should adopt this more rational line of thought then obsess about other's lifestyles.

I left the Catholic Church more than 30 years ago, in large part because I could not abide by their bronze age thinking. But in his short time in office, this Pope has really impressed me with his open-mindedness and his obvious and real love for his fellow beings on the planet. He is a great role model for Christians around the globe. Way to go, Francis.

I agree with the Pope.

But if you think the GOP, most of middle America, and the south are "obsessed" with guns and gays then you've been successfully brainwashed by the mainstream media who have their own anti-gun and gay marriage agenda to push-

I still practice Catholicsm to a degree and could not agree more with what you said.

Although I'm not catholic, I think he's really a breath of fresh air.

Seems like "the people's pope", not one of those ivory tower popes.

I agree, I was raised RC and nothing could have been more effective in driving me from organized religion but it's good to hear Francis embracing humanity and not judging what isn't any man's to judge.

Sounds like he confirming they are sins but that they need to pay attention to others as well. Commonly stated in most churches I have been to. Its not a Endorsement of voting for sin at all or I goring it.

I don't know why the Pope would want to play into this stereotype. Not being Catholic though his words aren't all that important to me.
