I seem to remember this type of comparison between government and family when I was in 1st grade. That would have been 1960.

To teach small kids abstract concepts, which government is, you have to use comparisons they understand.

I am about the same age as you, and I don't remember being taught government was family. I do however, remember being taught what family values were.

Might have been 2nd. Social Studies started about then. Typically what jobs people did.

"Janie's dad is a coal miner. His work helps keep us warm".
"Bob's dad is a policeman. He keeps us safe and works for all of us".

Maybe you went to school in Havana in 1961. Here, they didn't talk about the government until Jr high school. At that point, we had civics class and learned about the limitations of government power in America.

That is a far cry from teaching kids government is family.

Can't use those examples in public schools any more.

Too many fatherless children.

But I digress....startling to smell like "Brave New World".

Everyone belongs to everyone else.

You must be very young, then, or have a faulty memory. I suppose there was a period of time when children were no longer taught civics, probably starting right after Watergate, but that was after my time, so I'm not sure about it.

If they didn't then the Pittsburgh education system is a bigger ****hole than has been reported since I went to school in PA so had the same curriculum as you would have, if you're my age.

That probably explains Ravenstahl.
