The first sign was taken down in August after the department received complaints about a sign on town property from a local woman. “She didn’t say what kind of sign it was, but only that it was violating the town’s public right-of-way codes,” Driscoll said. “We sent an officer out there to check it out and he determined it was on town property and removed it.” After the sign reappeared two more times in the same location, the officer again removed it and turned it in to the Somers Highway Department. Driscoll said the matter was simply a result of following protocol. “It doesn’t matter what the sign says,” he said. “If we see signs in a location that violates town codes, we’re going to take it down.
Then whats with the aggressive stomping? I've pulled up a bunch of signs, never had to stomp on one.
I have to wonder...
Where do the people in that town put their yard/rummage/garage sale signs?
Do the police remove them, as well?
I would think they have to treat all signs equally!
Too bad I live so far away, I would really like to drive around that town, and call the zoning/code enforcement office with a complaint about EVERY little thing I could find that violated their codes!
I bet I could really keep them hopping!
Come to think of it, who is paying the taxes on the strip of land where the sign was placed? If it is, in fact, part of the road right of way, the homeowner should have no responsibility for it. If he is paying taxes on it, it is HIS property!
However, in the mean time, if it were me, I would place the sign 15 feet 1 inch from the road, EXACTLY!

It is probably a stupid sign ordinance that a bunch of suburban conservatives thought was a good idea.

Yeah, just another good reason to live 5 miles OUTSIDE the City Limits, like I do!
Although, I'm not sure a real conservative would be in favor of the municipal government "taking" land in that way!

You would be surprised, suburban people tend to do things like that regardless of the political views.
And people think cops will step down when asked to enforce unconstitutional or immoral laws.
