In a bit of irony, if the Federal Government shuts down, then the BATF will put almost everyone on furlough. Gun sales from dealers will STOP because the National Instant Criminal Background Check System will not be updated and will be taken offline until funding resumes. Furthermore licensing of new dealers and any processes that involve BATF processing will also STOP. In essence, Republicans will hurt one of their key constituencies.

If you are a member of the NRA, contact your local congressional representative to have them pass the budget before the deadline to keep the BATF operating! (this would most definitely be a first for the NRA...)

I don't own a gun and I don't really have a desire to own one but if I wanted one I have friends that have nearly any gun imaginable and I'm sure they would sell me one.

I'll take the trade off. Shut the government down and if I want a gun I will buy it off a friend.

That said.......the supreme court ruled that people have a right to own guns. If the government shut down their background checks the courts would most certainly side with a business who sold a gun to a citizen with full rights to own one.

If you don't get checked for a dealer purchase your local dealer is committing multiple crimes.

Civil rights violation. They must either remove the requirement or keep the lines open.

That said, we ARE talking about the "modern" U.S. government, here...

But no, the "shutdown" doesn't really mean that the whole government will actually shut down. It's nothing but a political ploy for both sides to use to shore up their base. The "shutdown" won't happen, and even if it does, it won't.
