"All military personnel will continue in a normal duty status regardless of their affiliation" under a shutdown scenario, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter wrote in a memo to military commanders and other senior defense officials.
But continued service could present complications for the troops themselves, Carter added.
"Military personnel will not be paid until such time as Congress makes appropriated funds available to compensate them for this period of service," he wrote.
This would include troops currently fighting in Afghanistan.
And this is a result of the Democratic Senate Majority leader failure to work with the Republican lef house, which is where ALL budget bills are initiated.
Of course it's a GOP bill.......H.R. 3210 provides a direct appropriation to pay the salaries and allowances to members of the Armed Forces (including active duty reserves and the Coast Guard) during any period in FY 2014 in which interim or full year appropriations bills are not in effect. Also provides the same authority to the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security to pay civilian employees and contractors engaged in support of the Armed Forces during the same period. The authority for making these payments shall last until enactment of a Continuing Resolution or regular appropriations bill providing for such payments, or a continuing resolution or regular appropriations bills without appropriations for these purposes, or January 1, 2015.

It's like a hostage taker killing the hostage and then blaming it on the people who didn't pay him the million dollar ransom.
The Senate didn't start this, the House GOP did, so GOP is making themselves look bad. They know they can't win this shutdown battle, and they push for it anyway.

There are no demands in this bill.
Senate vote on it and it's a no problem done deal.

this has been the chatter in the military community. I haven't worried about it too much, because I think the odds of service members not getting paid is slim to none. plus banks like USAA and Navy Fed have said they would either cover the Oct 15th pay (and then take the money back once direct deposit pay goes through) or give 0 interest loans.

It's a made up crisis for political grandstanding.
