Has anyone here ever been to a big fundraiser for a Senator, Representative or President? What exactly goes on at one that's held in someone's home? You don't have to say who it was for if you don't want to. I'm just curious what happens at one for a big office like Senator, Rep or President. |

I can tell you one thing that happens at big fundraisers for presidential candidates. Bartenders with cameras record the candidate shooting himself in the foot with his ridiculous words.

My MIL was active in politics for years. Occasionally she would invite us to attend one of these, usually when her husband wasn't able to attend. We got to meet some influential people, make small talk, discuss politics, and eat good (REALLY good) food. Usually they were anti-climatic. No "serious business" is conducted at these, just socializing, networking, etc...

haha.. Yea it shows how stupid some politicians are... Insulting half of America including the wait staff.. He should have known that they were going to either spit in his food, take video, or both... |

Congress is only in session 24 +/- weeks of the year. Fundraising for their own reelection, other party members and their party is the #1 job of a politician. It's breakfast, lunch, dinner. It never ends and it's most definitely not limited to the U.S. borders.
Years ago, I was " gifted" with a ticket to a " by invitation only" big $ fund raising dinner for Bush. You eat. You drink. You mingle. You listen to a brief blah-blah reminding you how exceptional you are, lame jokes and the need to restore America to something it never was. Then you wait in line for someone who may or may not be a legal worker who is working for tips, to fetch your car.

I have. For both Democrats and Republicans. The Republicans have better jewelry and the Democrats have better music. Republicans stand around the pool with their drinks, Democrats jump into the pool. Republicans make a big deal out of the mayor being there, Democrats make a big deal out of an ex-President being there. Republicans have a silent auction, Democrats have an Oscar winner auction off a signed script. Republicans use rent-a-johns, Democrats let everyone use the john in the cabana. |

... and a lot of checks quietly being passed from one hand to another, with even more pledges of support to arrive at a future date.
I've been to a few of these myself. While money isn't mentioned much, it is a tangible presence in every one I have attended, made even more noticeable due to the lack of it's mention. The folks who have it really enjoy spending time with others who also have it and share their politics. It is multi-level networking as much as anything else, as non-political new connections are always made at them. |
