Why do you feel people are too stupid to care for themselves?
Illogical question. Talk specifics. Liberals support social security, medicare, medicaid, unemployment benefits, helping students pay for college, helping people buy homes, helping people have children, a higher minimum wage, stronger unions, a woman's right to choose, etc and so on.
I don't see any of those things being the nanny state.
Now the problem is that in this nation for certain populations of Americans, other Americans do want to subject them to a nanny state.
For instance many Americans support drug testing people getting food stamps or TANF.
Many Americans support limiting the kinds of food that people who get food stamps can buy.
Many other people support forced ultra sounds for women attempting to get an abortion.
Many other people support forcing a women to look at the image of the ultrasound.
Many people support, more surveillance by the police for certain religious communities in this nation.
Many people support more surveillance by the police of certain racial and ethnic groups.
Many people support employers being able to dictate to employees what they can spend their own health insurance dollars on.
Don't let me get started on how we monitor and control former ex convicts.
Also teenagers or children and how we monitor and control them.
I could go on. The bottom line is the nanny state takes on a lot of forms and has a lot of supporters.
Both Republicans and Democrats want a nanny state. They just show it in different ways. The sooner we all break free of the two party system and start voting for people rather than parties the better off we'll all be.

Help is one thing, DEPENDENCY is entirely different and we are sick of paying for you. If you don't care enough about yourself why should we?
