Since liberal ideology is geared to help the unfortunate, does it mean liberals themselves are more compassionate?
Liberal ideology is not geared to help the unfortunate.
It is intended to help the more unfortunate.
However, like most plans made by incompetents, it fails to do so. The actual result, is tragedy and destruction... not only for the unfortunate, but for everyone else too.
And since the liberals invariable respond with even more liberalism, of the kind that has already hurt the poor and unfortunate, the conclusion must be that they are not at all compassionate. They are merely blindly ideological on top of their incompetence.
There are only two types of liberals -- the gullible, ignorant, utopian ones, and the deliberately dictatorial ones, who usurp the feel-good movements, and exploit ills of society, and the gullible, to advance their agenda of tyranny and totalitarianism.

No. You will find compassionate people on both sides of the aisle, it's asinine for liberals to always assume they have a monopoly on emotions. That's what compassion is, an emotion, it has absolutely nothing to do with politics. Liberalism and Conservativism is about how you see the role of Government. One side wants it bigger because they want it to take care of people, the other side wants it smaller because the know the Government is a corrupt and evil beast that when expanded will take away other's rights and does little to help the poor.

Any one who restricts the right of people to defend themselves against any and all who wish to harm them and their way of life is not compassionate at all..
The thing is about Leftist is they think good intentions will produce good results, very rarer is this the case.
The base their world view and ideals on emotions, fair and unfair, mean and kind and over whelming it is failing them, and like children they are throw a temper tantrums at anyone who dares speaks the truth.

First group -- the naive, the un-educated drones who regurgigate Mother Jones propaganda, who are fools and tools of the second group.
Second Group -- the evil ones, modern Marxists / socialists, who exploit social, environmental imperfections of this world, to grab power, choke the individual in the name of the "people" -- and establish their Dictatorship / Tyranny.
These are leeches, who like parasytes, usurp a healthy organism to spread their misery. They take the appearance of their host body cells, they quote the Constitution, when in fact they spread the cancerous metastasis of tyranny.
They creep up on vulnerable societies.
Distrust of the individual's ability to make rational decisions -- this is the common theme for both groups above.
Liberal (aka Marxist - Leninist) mindset is the antithesis of compassion for humans. If history is a guide, behind their appearance, "liberalism" has proven to be ruthless, inhumane, despicable. Their upbringing is dark and horrific.
For those of us familiar with both -- if you peel the thin veneer, there is very little daylight between our modern liberalism and Marxism-Leninism, in its core belief system.
