The Tea Party fits perfectly into the Paranoid Style of American Politics. What they are doing is seeing that politics is not about mediation between groups, it's manning the barricades against evil. This establishment becomes the enemy rarified.

Sorry, not as many people in the general population are as ignorant as the Tea Party supporters.
It's not paranoia if it's true.

I don't read much about the psychology of political parties (can you really psychoanalyze millions of people all at once? )

I read about political history. A lot. Going all the way back to Truman and Eisenhower, the parties play the game of demonizing the other side to win votes. Then they call each other on the phone and say, "No hard feelings. You know how it is."

Both sides run up the debt, both sides increase spending, both sides make the biggest promises to their biggest contributors. The Republicans curry favor from the corporations and defense contractors and the Democrats are beholden to the trial lawyers and unions. When they leave office, they make millions lobbying for those same groups.

This isn't a paranoid fantasy, it is the hard facts on the ground. ANY group that threatens to lower spending is going to incur the wrath of both parties. This isn't obvious to you?

Of course it is.

Obviously you didn't use that same logic when Obamacare was shoved down Americans throats by the Democrats and not a single Republican voted for it.

Yes they are.

BL21, just wondering how you feel about the Tea Party shutting down the government? Do you think their end justifies the means...... that their method is ok as long as it gets the desired results...... and do you think they will get the desired results?

Oh, who are you kidding? Turn the TV off.

Just out of curiosity, how many Republican's are disagreeing? The MSM is cheerfully flogging this lie about all those poor disenfranchised GOPer's held hostage by those evil bigots in Tea Party led by the dastardly mastermind Ted Cruz.

But the math is against that silly argument. There are 232 Republicans in the House, much more than the 40 supposedly hamstring John Boehner. If they wanted to stop this they could. But they don't want to. Yeah, a couple do, but most are from safe districts thanks to redistricting and their voters are telling them to hang in there.

I am too. Go shutdown

I especially enjoyed the stupid display they made at the WW2 memorial.

Reminded me of Romney's fake Superstorm Sandy aid rally.

Well, let's be clear. Only 18% of the government is "shutdown". I really don't think it is as catastrophic as the media is making it out to be. I do think the government is MUCH bigger than it needs to be, so this is an interesting situation. What if most people's lives go on business as usual? What does that say?

I think part of the reason it got this far is because the two sides are SO far apart. In 1996, they were much closer together.

I do not think the TP will "win". They will have to cave eventually. However, they will be able to go home in 2014 and say they did absolutely everything in their power to shut down Obamacare. Then they will get reelected. It just didn't work.

Obama has the media on his side. He can portray this as "those nasty anarchists are shutting down the government!" Viewed through the mainstream media, that is how most Americans will see this. So, I think he will win the public relations war and he is right (politically) not to compromise. He doesn't need to. All he has to do is wait.

Does this mean the Tea Party was wrong to do this? No.

"Sometimes the lost causes are the only ones worth fighting for."

How this plays out historically will be determined by how the Obamacare rollout goes. If it turns into a complete disaster, then the Tea Party can ride that wave into the White House and dominating the Republican Party. If Obamacare is a great success, then the Tea Party will be remembered the same as the Consitution Party in 1952. Anybody remember them? Didn't think so....

Just like Michelle Bachmann was laughing and cheering about the shut down - but then made a display at the WWII Memorial. You just want the parts you don't like shut down.

Unfortunately, the majority of thinking Americans see right through that. Then we have the video with McConnell and Rand Paul about 'winning'. Nice.

Well, don't be crying about VA Benefits and WWII Memorials then. A shut down is a shut down. If conservatives want it (and they seem to) ~ they need to own it.
