Most people don't even feel the shutdown and if they do it's because they caught it on the news or radio driving to work. Do we really need government involved in so much of our lives.

I think the furloughs and the previous sequestration showed that in an entity as big as the fed govt there is always room to be cut, yet still be functional.
While it is a matter of semantics, it is odd to hear that so many govt employees are "non essential" which makes you question why that are even on the payroll if they are not really needed. The govt really needs to give those workers a different description/classification.

Translation:

It mostly affects the needy. As long as my social security checks are being deposited and my medicare bills are being covered, who cares?

A very good friend of mine is working for the FBI and is not getting paid. I gather they will get back pay. Yes, it does impact people.

That's the catch. We still have people working without pay. It's not "essential" that they receive a paycheck though.

Will your social security check not being deposited affect you? They won't be deposited after Oct if the current situation continues on thru the end of this month.

First, non-essential does not mean they are not needed, it means that that no one is going to die or that there is going to be property loss if the job is delayed. It does NOT mean the job isn't needed or that the work doesn't need to be done - only delayed.

Second, the people left are doing the best they can to get as much of the missing people's work done as they can. Where my husband works they have both civilian and military people who work there. Every civilian was deemed "non-essential" because they had military too and so the military are doing as much of it as they can. This means that they went through all their cases and delayed whatever ones they could, then contacted the commanders and soldiers involved to let them know. Don't think for a minute that this hasn't inspired a couple of defense attorneys to start talking about "speedy trial." This last week the shortest day my husband has worked is 14 hours. He is military so he'll do what is required of him, but he can only do so many 16 hour days before he and the quality of his work suffer. Those cases didn't go away, they still have soldiers who need to be prosecuted and soldiers who need to be defended, just it was delayed. And they can't be delayed for too long, it this were to continue too long they would have to start dropping cases.

They need to find a better term for people who don't have to work in an emergency because people say crap like this.
