The US government has been out of work for one week now. Congress has unanimusly passed a bill to make sure that all government employees get paid for the time they were out of work.

My question is: If everyone in the US Government is performing valuable work and a week of work is missed, how will the US government get caught up?

It would seem to me that it would have been better if Congress would have said "We'll pay you for the lost time, but you'll have to make up the lost time, either by spending an extra hour or two each evening or coming in on weekends until the work is made up".

If this is not done it implies that the work done by government employees was not necessary which I am sure is not the case.

I realize that this is controversial and I am interested in other peoples opinions.

For the record, I do not feel that Congress and it's staff should be paid as they are the ones that got us into this mess yet continue to take no personal responsibility.

The federal government was shut down 21 days between December 16, 1995 and January 6, 1996.

By that statement are you implying that it doesn't make a difference?

Does that mean that the work the US government does is of no value?

Please expand because I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant.

They don't need to do anything to get caught up. They've NEVER been caught up even when they worked.

They are the government. They don't have to give two craps.

Exactly!!

This isn't Apple we're talking about, where if they "shutdown" they would be 1 million units "behind".

Other than processing SS/Welfare checks on time, what exactly does the government need to "catch up on"?

Personally, I don't think ANYONE should be paid, and certainly NOT the idiots in Congress or the idiot in the White House. No work, no pay. To pay them is the equivalent of getting a free paid vacation -- on the taxpayer's dime!

So all the applications that small business makes are worthless. I think that making the job easier is where it should be. Its like when you come back from vacation, your email box is full and if no one covers your work it takes a couple of weeks to get back on track.

Maybe the even better alternative is that congress excepts the inevitable and do their job.

Since government is evil, criminal, etc. its best it is never caught up. Those who yearn for more efficient government had better hope they dont get what they wish for.

It wouldn't allow me to rep you, as I'm required to spread it around. However; I second that.
