One point to the OP:
Back when the Republican party did all that good stuff, they were the progressives, not the conservatives.

I can even remember when it was the Republican party who opposed sending troops to Vietnam.

you're playing typical lefty word games. By your definition, Barack Obama, who wants to conserve big government and centralized DC control, is a conservative, while Rand Paul and Ted Cruz who want to shake things up, are anti-conservative.

As commonly used,' conservative' connotes advocacy of limited government, while 'liberal' connotes advocacy of big government. The segregationists that I mentioned all favored big government, hence they were liberals, not conservatives.

If you want to play word games, you can concoct any portrayal you wish.

"But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument'," Alice objected.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all."

I was going to post something along these lines but you and Wapasha beat me to it. The problem I see within the Republican Party is exactly this. The appearance that the Republican Party is giving off now (and make no mistake, the media is definitely exacerbating this) is that anybody who is not in lock-step with all right-wing talking points is somehow a RINO. If you don't staunchly believe in things like:

-all illegal aliens have no worth to society and should be deported post-haste
-there is no man-made component to global warming
-any and all government regulation is bad
-we must exclusively stand with and support Isreal at all cost, even to our detriment
-gays are an abomination and do not deserve the same rights as heterosexuals
-evolution is a lie by the devil and creationism should be taught as science
-you can never spend too much tax dollars on defense

I could go on, but the problem with the Republican Party right now, who represents the conservative movement right now for better or worse, seems intolerant of any diversity of ideals. Look at Jon Huntsman, he ran one of the most conservative state governor's administrations in recent history, winning many awards from conservative organizations, and oversaw one of the most successful state economies under his watch. But he believes in science and served a Democratic president as ambassador to the largest rising economic power in the world today, so Republicans both publicly and on this forum threw him under the bus.

I am a fiscal conservative. I believe that there is a huge need for entitlement reform in this country, and there should never be lifetime welfare except for the sick or the disabled. I believe our government is bloated and full of fraud and waste. But I also know the same is true for the defense department, whose waste and fraud I have witnessed with mine own eyes. I don't advocate spending more on defense. I think government interferes too much with small business. I think the ACA is a handout to insurance companies and does nothing to reduce the actual costs of healthcare nor encourages the kind of innovation that is needed to reduce costs.

But I also don't care if gays enter in same-sex unions and receive the same benefits and privileges under the law as my wife and I enjoy. I believe there is value in trying to protect and preserve the environment. I go to church, taught Sunday school, and was the church treasurer for several years, but I believe in evolution and think creationism is the very myth that it really is. When I read the right wing posters on sites like here on CD, and listen to the Tea Party rhetoric from Bachmann, Palin, and talk radio, and when the Republican Party shuts down the government to achieve nothing more than political theater, I realize that I am no longer welcome in the party.

I also don't think Obama is a Muslim, was born in Kenya, or is ineligible to be president. I just think his policies are mis-guided, half-baked, and not what the country needs right now. But I don't share the seething vitriolic hatred that many display here or at Tea Party rallies. So if I am a RINO, so be it.

Illegals cost this nation anywhere from 120 to 200,000,000,000$ a year.. while the cost a border fence is 60,000,000,000$ so..yeah.

More and more evidence is being found that man made globe warming is not happen, and solar output is the cause of climate fluctuation.

As for Israel, sink or swim,

Dont care about gays or their issues, leave it to the state...

Red tape and moronic tax code must go.
