Most people don't realize, or remember, that the US had federally funded mental health facilities for the insane. If a family member, clergy, police, or medical authority suspected a person was a danger to themselves or others they were placed in one of these facilities for testing. If it was found they were indeed a danger they were kept and medically treated until such time they were declared sane. If they could not be treated then they were held indefinitely. Then came President Reagan who overnight ended the funding for these facilities and all the patients were turned loose with a bottle of pills. Within sixty days most were in the the prison system and not receiving any medical treatment. The remainder became the first homeless.

I wonder if the rights of the mentally ill are better protected living under a bridge somewhere, as opposed to at least a bed, a roof and meals in an institution. There were abuses, but talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Well, that's the most blanket and racist comment I've seen in quite some time. Care to share your proof of this wild claim that white people are born with an advantage?
white privilege is not a myth. great 20/20 episode that shows a black and white person conducting the same activities.
in that episode the white guy was greeted as family by a shoe rep, while the white shoe rep just stared at the black guy.
white guy was offered housing on the spot, black guy was told it was already rented (keep in mind it was the same building they went to)
in a cd store the black male was being trailed by a white rep.
some white and black kids conducted another experiment i saw online as recently as 2010.
a white and a black 18 year old go to kay jewelers. the white kid gets a credit line for 1,000 on the spot, the black kid says he wasn't even approached for 2.5 minutes.
it would be great if there was no white privilege and society was color blind, but whites in power do give other whites the beenfit of the doubt, which means there is some inherent racism strain within white people.
