The Pilgrim Story: Vital Insights And Lessons For Today
Agreement With The Adventurers

The contract between the Adventurers and the Pilgrims consisted of ten points. The most critical of which stated, “That all such persons as are of this colony are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock and goods of the said colony.” Further, it was agreed that during the first seven years. “all profits and benefits that are got by trade, traffic, trucking, working, fishing, or any other means of any persons, remain still in the common stock until the division.”

Today we would call this a socialist commune. In other words, the Pilgrims accepted the socialist principle, “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” Each person was to place his production into the common warehouse and receive back, through the Governor, only what he needed for himself or his family. The surplus after seven years was to be divided equally, along with the houses, lands, and chattels, “betwixt the Adventurers and Planters.” Apparently the entrepreneurially-minded Adventurers felt this arrangement was their best means to recover their profits. They saw no inconsistency between their own private profit seeking companies and their denial to the Pilgrims the right to work their own land for the benefit of themselves and their families.

Frankly, the Pilgrim leaders had expressed their desire to own their own lands and homes and even work two days each week for their own gain. But the Adventurers would not hear of it. The contract was a “take it or leave it” proposition. The Pilgrims reluctantly took it.

Socialism Abolished – Free Enterprise Established

The leaders of Plymouth colony decided to scrap their socialistic agreement with the Adventurers and the philosophy of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” Individuals were now able to own their own homes, property, and keep the fruit of their own efforts. What happened?

In 1621, the Pilgrims planted only 26 acres. Sixty acres were planted in 1622. But in 1623, spurred on by individual enterprise, 184 acres were planted! Somehow those who alleged weakness and inability became healthy and strong. It’s amazing what incentive will do to improve bad attitudes!

The Governor here expresses his belief that Socialism is not Godly order or economic system.Consider his observations and analysis: “For this (socialist) community was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort.

Conclusion

The Pilgrim experience dating from 1623 was and is yet a prototype for the United States of America. They learned the hard way that: (1) Socialism does not work; it diminishes individual initiative and enterprise; (2) Socialism is not a Godly economic system; and (3) Famine and drought can be used by God to humble a people and set them on a proper course. The Pilgrims responded. The real question today is: Can Americans learn these vital insights from the Pilgrims or must we too face famine and drought in the coming years?

Studies show atheists know more about the bible than believers do.

Pretty simple. Follow my rules and the Kingdom of God awaits. Don't and you lose.

Jesus doesn't fit into any neat little human political classification.

If I did have to pickone I'd say he was a totalitarian.
Your confusing following God with politics and government. That was the meaning of "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's."

If Jesus was a "totalitarian" (political philosophy) our American system of government would have been totalitarian, because the founders (the colonists) were believers, and followers of Jesus Christ, and they were "Bible thumpers" (as you lib's like to say).

It is my understanding that the old testament tithe was the wage for the priesthood, so they could perform their work as God had laid out for them .
When Jesus died on the cross ( I believe it's in Luke) the vale of the temple was ripped top to bottom .
God basically fired the priesthood .
Jesus' born again spirit filled believers became a priesthood ,in place of needing single individuals to teach in God's place. So all men have the potential to be taught of God himself, not simply about God from some man's distorted stand point.
As for the church receiving tithe , this was not Jesus command this was something that began when people gave on their own .
It may have been well meaning , but it was not God instructed.
A great many damages occurred because of it both then and now.
In stead of getting back into the upper room and finding the Holy Spirit's instruction, they began taking tasks into their own hand, things Jesus did not instruct.
Was Jesus worried about money ?
He had a thief holding the money bag.
When it came time to pay taxes, He sent the disciples fishing and they found the coin, just as Jesus had instructed them.
Jesus said ,"I only do what My Father tells me"
That is our example ,doing the Father's instruction, and not that of another man, It is not called for, especially those born again and filled with the Holy Spirit just as Jesus demonstrated .
In simple terms,
When I gave my life to the Lord ,all of my life is His, the whole package , all I make, all I do, all my things, and all my future, all belong to Him.
So that, if He asks that I give some one some thing, It was His to begin with not mine. I am just a care taker. It is His property, because I choose to be His property.
This is what Lordship means.
An old testament Hi priest owned nothing ,every thing he had belonged to God.
God often will bless with abundance, those that obey Him.
But a man's life does not consist of the things which a man possesses. (Jesus)
Just like one receives wage for work accomplished ,treasure is laid up in heaven for those obedient to God, obedient by His perspective, His instruction via the Holy Spirit Jesus provided His believers.
Tithes are not required of priests , if their life is God's possession.
Taxes are what keep a government capable of taking care of the needs of the people under it.
Unfortunately many decisions are being made by are government that we are not allowed to voice our opinion on. and this is wrong.
I digress
Jesus was not politically inclined ,His devotion is strictly to the Father .
Theistic on an eternal basis. As His believer should be as well.

Progressivism (the modern term for socialism) is where the Democrat Party wants to take us back to. We seem to forget history.

Like dogs returning to their vomit.

Then why is socialism in land use and housing so popular among conservatives?

Oh please. I'm sure there is some catch to these so-called "studies."
Next you'll claim atheists know more about it than PhD biblical scholars do.

A thing can be improbable in one way and not in another; it has to be compared to the probability of the alternatives.

A specific combination of numbers coming up in a 6/49 lottery is very improbable, but it's not a miracle either, because something had to come up and every other possible combination is equally improbable. (It may seem like a miracle if you have the winning ticket, but that's obviously not a serious objection.)

Many of them study it, but only so they can find passages they can take out of context in order to attack Christians. They're as guilty of picking and choosing what parts of the Bible fits their agenda as the extremist Evangelicals they're criticizing.
