The best example which no one has mentioned yet is the Miami River Cops back in the 80's. They were involved in protection, intimidation, evidence tampering, and even murder for drug lords. Heck some even became drug dealers themselves.
Even if you were to look up stories about them, I'd bet dollars to donuts that the primary reason they came about would not be discussed in the mainsteam articles.
The reason it occurred was due to a federal/state program of Affirmative Action. That is right, a crazy scheme to hire minorities at an accelerated rate to meet a quota system put in place. So instead of rejecting the typical applicant with a questionable past or character flaws, they hired any and every applicant based on their race or gender. They even went so far as to hire applicants with past criminal records. Needless to say it didn't take long for these so called police to allow their lack of a moral compass to start committing crime themselves.
You're right of course. There were never corrupt white cops, and there was never corruption in police departments before the 1970s.
Is this serious? There is strong belief one of the cartels was an extension of the CIA. The cartels have also been recently recruiting ex us military special ops forces and even enlisting their members in special ops units.
Of course. The Police have always been involved in the drug trade.
To put things in perspective, when one of the biggest heroin dealers was arrested in 1970's NYC, and he took a plea to lessen his sentence, 75% of the NYC DEA went down with him.

Well, color me surprised. A RWNJ blaming police corruption on brown and black people . What more of society's ills would we not have if it weren't for ethnic minorities?
1) Is it possible that there are cops on the payroll of drug cartel's? Let's say that certain cops patrol a certain area, and provide a safety net for the drug gangs to sell their product. Because if someone calls the police, they will be the first ones to respond, since they are the closest in proximity, but they will just say in their report that they drove by but didn't see any people matching the description in that location.
2) Is it possible that drug cartels/gangs have evolved in the last 50 years? That they have recruited people to become cops to help them facilitate their business, like with what is mentioned in question 1. We all know that communists and socialists have infiltrated state and federal governments and their agencies. Why couldn't the same be said of cops?
These questions came to mind after the recent travesties in New York. There was like, at least 2 confirmed cops in the motorcycle group that did nothing when the SUV driver was getting beat. Maybe there was more since I last checked. What if there are cops in actual gangs. Not saying that those in NY were in a gang, but just in general.

Has a cop ever gone on a killing spree?
Has a cop ever shot someone simply because they could?
Has a cop ever harassed innocent people?
Has a cop ever broken down the door of a private home without a warrant?
Has a cop ever shot pets, just to be safe? (see Hawthorne cop murders dog)
Of course they own cops, just like the mob owns cops, just like politicians (Bloomberg called NYPD his own private army) own cops.
Humans are corrupt when they have the power to be.

In Mexico, the cartels own entire police departments and even military units, whose commanders are on the payroll, along with most of the rank and file.
I doubt that'll happen here, though.
I guess it might depend a bit on where you live ...... but, don't make the mistake of thinking "Not my town". It's a lot more than "pockets" or even "isolated Cities" - why do you think that the proven strategy in Mexico won't apply here? I've lived my entire (and long) life in a border State - this sickness is moving North as these Drug Lords are fighting over USA "Territory" now.
If you happen to live in a Sanctuary City ..... your City is already infiltrated. Time is short to attempt to take it back, but it won't be easy.
