It's not "meant to replace" anything. It's *meant to include* those who aren't christian, but who also observe holidays during the same time of the year. And many christians use the greeting as well, whether you believe it or not.

personally i wish the holidays would just go away, they are a royal pain in every ones backside. i always worked thanksgiving and christmas because they have gotten so commercialized that they no longer mean anything.

Nope, no feelings of obligation here. Now, in November I often find myself saying Happy Holidays as an inclusion for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Afterwards, it's Merry Christmas.

It's way to early to be thinking about Christmas. We are fixing to get mugged by little urchins demanding candy. Damn those turnip carving pagans, they started it.
