GW carver and harriet tubman would be ahead of him. got a problem with nat turner? a man who would not be owned? you people like slavery. I forgot.
Fascinating. You revere a man who led the slaughter of 60 men, women and children to make his point, while turning up your pretty white nose at the man who changed the nation with non-violent means?
I do believe that says a lot about you, lionsgators. A lot that I already knew, but still.
The fact that Columbus (and his financiers) had the guts to go exploring into the unknown, and the Indians didn't, "does not matter"?
I suppose we could wonder WHY the Indians didn't sail east, instead of Columbus sailing west. Aside from their not having the technology - the boats the Indians had probably weren't too suitable for thousand-mile-plus voyages. Nor did the Indians ever have the interest and inquisitiveness to DEVELOP ships capable of thousand-mile-plus voyages.
Heck, if they'd just gotten off their duffs, they probably wouldn't be called "Indians" today. Instead, the Europeans might be known as "Hawaiians" or "Incas" by now.

I remember reading a newspaper editorial or columnist's article - can't remember which - way back in 1992, the 500th year since Columbus that said from that point on the Columbus legend will begin to fade. The author of that article predicted that as more people became knowledgeable about Columbus and modern sensibilities about slavery and conquest advance old Cristoforo's legacy will become more tarnished and less attractive.
That year - 1992 - not one, but two movies were made about Columbus.
Among other reasons, he had the courage and convictions to do something that so many people said was impossible. And to put his life on the line many times in doing so. If the Vikings had managed to stick it out when they first visited, and we knew the name of the leader, I'm sure he would be the one we were celebrating.
