If I was in the upper mgt at Walmart I would fire all the people that were involved in making a decision to trust the public to do the right thing. Predicting the outcome was as easy as stealing candy off a baby with no arms. I would have a full investigation and even fire the people that agreed with that idiot decision.
Why ? Walmart got their money. Walmart is not out anything.
Walmart increased their revenue at taxpayer expense.
Privatize profits and socialize debt.
The government is out money in this deal and it's up to the government to do something.
Walmart said they monitored all transactions. Hopefully that means they will get the money back as it comes back into the accounts, even if it takes multiple weeks of transfers. People should have to pay for what they took.
Walmart was stupid to accept the cards while they were not working. If someone is really desperate, give them a free can of baby formula or a loaf of bread and some PB. People don't need carts full of soda and Cheetos to survive ever, and certainly not to make it through a few hours of non-working food stamps.
The whole episode shows how stupid people in this country have become. People over 18 should be able to feed themselves and their offspring for a couple of days. We have created a nation of dependent idiots. Many of whom are also willing to steal when given half a chance.
Saw this same thing in our local Wal-Mart. Hood Rats walked away from full carts after they heard announcment. More food than they could possibly afford, setting a great example for the 10 kids they had in tow. Clerk said most would would go in trash and couldnt go back on shelf.
Welfare has gone way overboard, now its just an excuse for able body folks to leech off the gov. Shameful.
They wont get away with it. I hope those who got out with food can make it last for months because they will show neg balances until they get past the amount they took.
A better decision would have been a $100 limit till cards worked again.
Well since this was Walmart's doing then Walmart should be billed for the overage on those cards.
It's not Wal-Mart's doing, if these were checks who's fault is that? These people know they have X amount in the account, it's theft if they knowingly exceeded their balance.

Or the one-day-past-expiration date subs and rotisserie chickens like our Wal-Mart throws out by the cartload.
Okay, the subs aren't that great - but the whole roasted chickens could feed a lot of hungry people.
Walmart is partially to blame here. The system is set-up that if you can't scan the card to verify balance and purchase, there is a toll-free number you call, enter the card number and purchase amount and they authorise the purchase. Insufficient funds and the purchase is declined.
I'm not letting the fraudsters off the hook, but the system has checks and balances in it, Walmart chose not to use them.
