Would there be a down side of going post-racial as a society? (disregarding race)
Would the down side be bad enough to warrant stamping out any progress towards a post-racial society?
If we could all disregard race and treat each other as individuals, that would be great. I would not have to worry about certain things, like how I might get treated.
It's not going to happen anytime soon. There is too much power and money involved in racial issues.
And it goes back to the old days. Consider this. In Virginia, African slaves and European indentured servants gathered together and rebelled against the elites. Bacon's Rebellion. What happened after this? The elites, who happened to be of European descent, used Whiteness as a reason to give indentured servants land and put them on slave patrols. Basically, race was used to keep power within the elites.
It's interesting that in Brazil slavery lasted 300 years under their govt, and didn't end to date, but only officially ended in 1888. There is virtually no whine from that part of the world for it. But here where slavery lasted 76 years under American rule of law we have had 148 years of whine. With Obama it has only become worse.
There seems to be a much larger focus on race and ethnicity than before.
I lived in Miami briefly and it occurred to me that people simply can not get over ethnicity and have no problem being irrational as well as hypocritical. Miami is supposedly well known for diversity but me being Asian was the primary trait in which I was judged by. At least "racists" white folks seem able to get beyond my ethnicity pretty easily and get down into the nuts and bolts of who I am. My husband is also white and he was looked down upon as being white bread and also assumed to be racist and unable to relate based on his race alone. Ugh.
Miami? Go figure. Guess what is the largest ethnicity down there. I think you know the answer yet it is whites that are racists?

It will never happen. Our government perpetuates racial issues and it's not about to stop. It would be a huge step forward if we could get the government out of the race business. We should remove all race questions on government documents.
I would like that, and shame the news everytime they report a crime from somewhere way across the country about white/black assults ect ect. They do it on purpose, back and forth. One week they are for the blacks, the next for the whites, once in a while, you see a mexican with no license run over a kid!
Sure, and I think we are well on our way. Mixed race people are expanding rapidly, and most of us just don't care. I don't think things will change overnight though. It is a gradual process, and I am am not sure I would say we will be over race any time soon. But the trajectory is encouraging.
