the fact that we are here today to debate raising america ’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the us government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government’s reckless fiscal policies.
Quote:
increasing america ’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here’. Instead, washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.
Both sides know that it is going to get raised.....probably 2.3 Trillion just to get us to the end of 2012. No two ways about it..........the national debt will be 20-22 Trillion by the end of 2016.
When George W. Bush took office the debt limit was 5.95 trillion. The national debt was 5.73 when bush first took office. When he left office our national debt was 10.63 trillion. So, how did the national debt double under eight years of bush's reign?
Simple. Bush and the repubs raised the debt limit four (4!) times between 2002 and 2006. It was raised again multiple times during bush's tenure.
The republicans being against raising the debt ceiling under Obama is purely political. They had no problem with it when bush put this country in the worst debt it's ever been in.
We need to get out of these very expensive wars bush got us into. We need to cut spending, but don't do all of the cuts from only social programs. It has to be more balanced than that!! And we need to increase revenue.
THe yahoos in D.C. will began sinking us the day george bush took office. It continues and we cannot continue on this path. This repub vs. dem needs to stop and they need to take care of business, but they won't. We're sunk. We'll be sunk worse if a repub gets in office as they really aren't fiscally conservative. They spend the big bucks on military, war and welfare for the rich. they spend more than dems, but in different areas.

You also forgot the $1.5 quadrillion that, eventually, the Fed will have to print to cover the fraudulent transactions the banks and their criminal partners in Wall Street have been engaged in thanks to Fannie, Freddie, the Fed, and fractional-reserve banking. Why? Because these banks and hedge funds are too big to fail of course

This needs to be repeated. Raising the debt ceiling was never a problem for Republicans until Obama became President. It's pretty amazing, really.

Yeah yeah, "It's Bush's fault." At some point Obama is going to have to take responsbility for the job he very actively sought out and won. By the way, the Republicans are not against raising the debt ceiling, they're against unconditionally raising the debt ceiling. And guess what happened when a bill to raise the debt ceiling unconditionally was put to a House vote? Most Democrats voted against it too.
