US Senator says,“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”

That was Senator Obama 2006.

For the record, I opposed raising the debt ceiling back then and felt Senator Obama was right in the above statement and feels it applies today as well as 2006.

When all else fails, rely on a talking point from Obama in 2006 when he was a Senator playing politics with something he knew would pass anyway.

Most countries don't have a debt ceiling because it makes no sense.

Congress has the authority to raise revenue and appropriate monies. They have the ability to appropriate more than they raise. Why does it make sense to have a spending plan that spends more than it raises and then separately need to pass a bill to borrow the difference that you already spent?

The U.S. doesn't have a debt or deficit crisis and trying to run surpluses now threatens the weak economy. Debt isn't our current problem, unemployment is.

Did his views "evolve" on the matter?

Because that's like spending everything to pay off an old phone bill and leaving nothing to feed the family. The phone bill can be paid incrementally, but the family will starve without a minimum amount of daily food.

It is a sign of failure. And there's plenty of blame to go around for a long time now, including for the Democrats and the Republicans.

But the rational way to solve it is to get a sensible deal to cut entitlements and military, not to default on the bills we already owe.

In the near term, we have no choice but to raise the debt ceiling; in the medium term several years out, that's where we can take action so that we don't have to raise it as much in the future.

Probably, it is one thing to play politics, it is another to understand why it is bad to default.

It makes no sense, you're right.

Unemployment is a much, much larger problem than is being currently represented.

Yes, but you can see where this can-kicking has led us.........to another "showdown" three months from now. And what do you suppose is going to happen then? I think, once again, they'll punt the ball down the field for another three months.

At some point, they need to resolve this the correct way. Enough of the band-aid buck passing.
